DIAGNOSE BEFORE DECIDING ON REPAIRS

A shift problem.
More than one possible cause.

The way a transmission shifts depends on mechanical parts, hydraulic operation and electronic controls. A change in performance does not automatically mean the complete gearbox needs replacing.

Tell us whether the issue happens when cold, when warm, under acceleration or when selecting a gear. We consider these details alongside appropriate checks to help guide the investigation.

SIGNS WORTH CHECKING

When the transmission needs a closer look

Similar symptoms can involve the engine, clutch, mountings or drivetrain. Inspection helps distinguish the likely cause before a repair is recommended.

01

Harsh or jerky shifts

A jolt during gear changes may relate to transmission operation, controls, mountings or another issue. Testing helps narrow the cause.

02

Delayed gear engagement

A pause when selecting drive or reverse needs assessment. Note whether it happens when cold, warm or after the vehicle has been parked.

03

Slipping or unexpected rev changes

Engine speed rising without the expected acceleration can have several causes, including transmission or clutch concerns.

04

Transmission warning messages

A warning may be accompanied by stored fault information. Relevant codes and data help guide further checks.

05

Fluid leaking beneath the vehicle

Fluid near the gearbox may come from a transmission seal or another source. The source and fluid type should be identified.

06

Noise or vibration while driving

A noise or vibration can involve the gearbox, drivetrain, mountings or other systems. Share when it occurs to guide inspection.

HOW IT WORKS

From a shifting concern to a repair plan

01

Describe the concern

Send your make, model, transmission type if known and a description of when the issue appears.

02

Inspect and review information

Check relevant visible concerns and available diagnostic information from the systems involved.

03

Investigate the likely causes

Select appropriate further tests based on the symptoms, initial findings and vehicle requirements.

04

Discuss repair and rechecks

Explain the findings and proposed work, then carry out relevant rechecks after any agreed repair.

WHAT WE INVESTIGATE

Transmission checks matched to your vehicle

The approach depends on the transmission type, vehicle design, symptoms and equipment compatibility. Contact the workshop to discuss your vehicle.

Electronic diagnostic checks

Reviewing available transmission fault information and relevant operating data where supported.

Fluid condition & leaks

Checking fluid-related concerns using the appropriate vehicle procedure, and investigating visible leaks where accessible.

Shift quality & engagement

Assessing the reported shift or engagement issue and the conditions in which it occurs.

Controls & connections

Considering relevant wiring, connections or control inputs when diagnostic findings point to an electrical concern.

Mountings & drivetrain

Checking related components when vibration, knocks or movement may be affecting the symptoms.

Repair requirements

Discussing the findings and whether further inspection, component repair or specialist work is appropriate.

DATA AND MECHANICAL SYMPTOMS TOGETHER

Relevant diagnostic information
considered alongside how the vehicle behaves.

A WARNING IS THE STARTING POINT

Check the symptoms.
Choose the right repair.

A transmission code or harsh shift does not explain the entire fault. Relevant data, fluid checks and physical inspection help determine whether further testing or repair is appropriate.

01

Understand the conditions

Establish when the shifting concern appears and review relevant warnings and vehicle history.

02

Test the possible causes

Use suitable diagnostic and physical checks to investigate the initial findings.

03

Explain the repair path

Discuss what has been found, any remaining uncertainty and the appropriate next step.

GOOD TO KNOW

Transmission repair: your questions answered

Does a harsh shift mean I need a new gearbox? +

Not necessarily. Fluid-related concerns, controls, mountings and other faults can affect shifting. Inspection is needed before deciding on the repair.

Can you work on every transmission type? +

Requirements differ between conventional automatics, CVTs, dual-clutch and manual transmissions. Share your vehicle details so the workshop can confirm the inspection and repair options available.

Will changing the transmission fluid fix the problem? +

A fluid service is not a guaranteed repair for a shifting fault. The correct procedure and fluid depend on the vehicle, and the underlying cause should be assessed first.

What does a transmission warning mean? +

It means the vehicle has detected a condition that needs attention. Available fault information can help guide diagnosis, but the warning alone does not identify the repair.

Can I continue driving with a transmission problem? +

It depends on the fault. Loss of drive, severe slipping, significant leaks or worsening symptoms need prompt assessment. Contact the workshop to discuss whether recovery is appropriate.

How much does transmission repair cost? +

The cost depends on the vehicle, transmission type, fault and work required. Share your vehicle details and symptoms to discuss an inspection and an estimate based on the findings.
